Once upon a time, I thought that New Year resolutions were about making me a better person. You know, the usual ‘lose weight, get fit’.
Or about new experiences or ways of looking at life. Things like ‘read a new book every month’ or ‘laugh more’.
I still resolve to make these changes, of course.
But more and more, the changes I make are about ensuring that I live sustainably: sustainably for me and for ensuring our precious planet remains habitable.
Doing things a little differently is all it takes.
Often these actions that will benefit us personally will also help us to tread more lightly on the Earth. Eating less meat (for example, Meatless Mondays) is an example. We can get a healthier body, and in doing so we can create fewer greenhouse gas emissions (if we eat red meat) and use less water and land to produce our food.
And sometimes we only need to take those actions once.
Just one step in a different direction set us on the path to a very different destination.
So, here we are, at the start of a new year. And what better time to start walking different paths?
One step I took in a different direction while ago was to change banks. Now I get better deals for my money, I know that my money is not being used to wreck our climate…and I’m happy :-)…just like my friend Bec:
If you haven’t already done so, make one of your New Year resolutions to change to a bank that does not fund exploitation of coal, oil and gas and associated infrastructure. It’s easy.
And if you’ve already made the switch, how does it feel? Just leave your comments in the Reply box below …or send me a voice message by clicking on the tab on the right.
Till next time…be gentle to yourself and our world!
